This course is a part of the Permit Conditions for Boat Based Whale & Dolphin Watching in South Africa. The course is NOT a Theta/SATOUR Tour Guide Course. It is an MCM (Marine & Coastal Management) requirement, and covers the Geography and Metrology of the South African marine and coastal areas, pertinent weather conditions for BBWW operations, as well as an introduction to the different species of animal, fish and reptiles that are likely to be encountered in different areas during normal whale watching and eco-cruise excursions along the coastline. The course is approved by Marine & Coastal Management and costs only R 360 or US$ 45 per person. There is no time limit to complete the course. The course also covers the mandatory approach regulations and Permit Conditions, together with some applicable extracts from the MLRA (Marine Living Resources Act). The course consists of 12 Modules, all of which have to be completed successfully in order to obtain accreditation. In addition, a Practical Approach Module needs to be completed. This can be done on arrangement by sending an e-mail to info@pennyferrytraining.com
Those of us who live or work at or near the sea need to show more concern for caring for the environment and looking after the wildlife that is an integral part of the habitat. Keeping on the lookout for oiled, injured, ill or otherwise traumatized should be commonplace, but what to do when we see one. It is necessary to have the right training, equipment and resources to deal with sea birds that are clearly in need of assistance, and this short course give an idea as to what is required to assist correctly. There is a great deal of personal satisfaction in being able to help these creatures, but on the other hand there is a great deal of damage done by inexperienced, untrained and ignorant "do-gooders".
The course consist of a short Powerpoint Presentation and then 2 short videos that try to show some techniques. Completion of the course means you are more aware than before, but does not qualify you to go out and start rescuing and capturing sea birds - apart from doing more harm than good, there are Laws and Regulations forbidding certain such action!
On completion of the test associated with the course, we will issue you with a Certificate of Completion as evidence that you went through the theory. You still need to join a volunteer group and get Practical Experience
